Sweetest Thing

The sweetest thing happened last week between Olivia & Madeleine. They were sitting on the couch when Olivia looked over at Madeleine, put her arm around her and said "..you my sister, you my best friend". Big smile & all. It just melted my heart. What more could I ask for then my daughters to be best friends?

And if I wasn't proud enough already, Olivia also learned to jump off the edge of the pool (holding my hands) and go under! She'd been very reluctant to go under water but for some reason, she's decided that if she jumps off the edge holding someone's hands, she's happy to hold her breath and go under. Go figure.

July will be a big travel month for us. We have our family vacation next week in the Dells and then we'll be making a trip to the Cities. I'm still deciding if we want to make another drive to the Cities this weekend for the 4th. Happy driving!

Doctor, Doctor

The girls and I were out playing this afternoon when they wanted to pretend that their cozy coupe had car problems. We pumped tires and pumped gas but to no avail, there still seemed to be a problem. Madeleine had a lightbulb! She took off running for the door wanting to go inside. I wasn't sure what she wanted but followed her in. She ran to the playroom straight to her doctor's kit. Doctor's kit in hand, she ran outside shouting, "I fix it! I fix it!". She happily took out the stethoscope and began listening to the car...

I can't tell you how proud I am of my little doctor. The fact that she made the connection of her car being broken and wanting to fix it and running to get her doctors kit, priceless!

P.S. Within minutes Daddy pulled into the driveway and the car was a fleeting thought.

Sunday drive

We took a short trip to visit my parents yesterday. We live close enough now that we're able to drive up, spend the day, have dinner and then drive home. We haven't seen my parents since mid-April so it was nice to get home.

Unfortunately, our drive up was quite scary as we nearly missed a major car accident. And when I say near miss, I mean "stomping-on-my-brakes-so-fast-so-hard-I-left-tire-marks". It was an accident I never want to see again.

Traffic was already slowing but the two cars in front were tailgating. I could see red lights in the distance so I slowed and began to brake. Suddenly, all traffic stopped and the car directly in front rear-ended the car in front of it. That 2nd car swerved into the right lane before swerving back and landing 180 opposite traffic. We had hoped it would end there.

But no, in the commotion of the car swerving lanes, it bumped an SUV. I'm not sure exactly what happened --- only that the SUV spun 360, flipped over into the median ditch and rolled over into oncoming traffic. Oncoming traffic was scrambling, bracing themselves for impact into that SUV. To make matters worse, a semi was coming and it screeched its brakes frantically trying to stop. It started to fishtail and all I could think was, "Oh God, please let that semi stop! Please let that semi stop!" There must of been many of us praying because fortunately the semi stopped just short of tapping the SUV's bumper. If that semi would not have stopped; it would have plowed straight through that SUV and into our minivan. I shudder at the thought.

Part 2

I just had to write that I went running earlier tonight. Not nearly as fast as I did 3 nights ago but still, I ran. My slow pace made it a half mile further than last time. It was raining when I started but I put on a cap and went out anyway. There's nothing like running in the rain. Okay, not the wet shoes and socks part but the fresh smell of rain and the cool misting.

I think I have shin splints already. I majorly had a problem with them in HS when I ran but have not had any problems until 2 days ago. I'm hoping I can ice and get new running shoes and this will go away. Otherwise, I won't be able to run!

Aaaah, summer

It's a beautiful day. The sun is warm and the breeze is light. My girls and I spent late morning frollicking in their wading pool. Buckets of water later, I find myself in quiet as both my daughters are napping.

Last night Chay and I took the girls to family swim. It's a good thing we were both there because both daughters demanded undivided attention. Madeleine learned to jump into the pool at the deep end (3'6") and kick herself up to the top. The first few times she'd jump in while holding my hands. Then she'd jump in and I'd grab her as soon as she went under. Before you know it, she was kicking herself to the surface! Her last jump, I grabbed her while she was jumping in to make sure she knew I was still there to catch her and she got MAD at me! She climbed out of the pool and demanded to jump again all by herself!

I am amazed by her newfound discovery. Unfortunately now she thinks she really can swim and never wants me to hold her in the water.

...So Good

I really should work out more. This "skinny-fat" body is turning into "fat-fat". Both my girls went to bed at 7:30pm tonight (early considering lately it's been 9:30p or 10:00p) so after 30 minutes of laying on my bed surfing channels, I decided to go for a walk.

The sun was starting to set as I walked out the front door and the breeze was perfect. Still daylight but not too hot and no bugs. I thought I'd test myself and walk the circle drive to the end of the condos and then maybe try running. To my amazement, I had enough energy (built up laziness & angst) to run the entire golf cart path on this half of the golf course. 1 1/2 miles!

Up and down hills and trying to keep a steady pace, I kept telling myself, "Okay I'll run to that first house". Then it was, "I'll run to the entrance of the golf cart path." "Okay, I'll probably only make it back to the first turn by the condos." And before you know it, I was on my third winding path up a hill and back down again. The worst part of the path is the huge hill on Hole 1, but I made it and passed the clubhouse before rounding my way back to our driveway. I was feeling so good, I kept going! I made it all the way back to the golf cart entrance before stopping. And I stopped for no reason so after walking 200 yds, I started running again. I completely underestimated my endurance.

I don't know where this surge of energy came from but I wish I had it every night. Ok, who am I kidding, at least every other night. I needed this kickstart to get my lazy butt in shape! I have been so lazy the last 10 years! I've never had to worry about eating sweets or carbs or whatever, but in the last 5 months, I gained 8 lbs. I have been at a steady weight since having Madeleine and was even 10 lbs lighter last summer in Miami. So this 8 lbs is very noticeable! Whether it's a combination of eating too many sweets & sugars or new birth control or lack of exercise, my body is hurting.

My bulging tummy, my flabby thighs and my lackluster energy. Nothing to brag about. Unfortunately it's been Chay and our daughters that have gotten the short end of the stick. My snapping attitude, my lagging umph and my unhappy mood. Needless to say, I am sick of being unfit and making excuses. If I continued at that pace, I would be afraid to face myself next summer.

Thank you to my girls who went to bed early tonight and thank you to summer tv for having nothing to watch. I have been pathetic at laying in bed and curling up to nonsense reality tv and letting my body terribly age.

So now I just have to remind myself of this EVERY time I don't feel and don't think I have the energy to exercise. This is my promise to a healthier start. Swim, bike, run --- I need to keep my body moving.

Silence

Can I just share how much I love my quiet time? I LOVE my quiet time. Unfortunately it usually comes between the hours of 11:00pm - 1:00am but still, I'll take it. This is the only time everyone in the house is asleep and I can do whatever I want, un-interrupted.

Size Skinny

It's a sad day but I have finally parted with clothes from my 20s. Moving has made me come to terms with the fact that I'm never going to fit into the clothes I once wore when I was 24. (What was I thinking wearing some of the stuff I wore?!) As I've unpacked, I've tried on every little piece to make sure it still comfortably fits and that I actually will wear it again.

Needless to say, I have cut my wardrobe in half. Considering I run around most days in tshirts and jeans, I don't have a need for business clothes or "going-out" clothes. "Going-out"? Don't make me laugh. And work clothes? As a good friend said, "Think about it, when you do go back to work; are you really going to find another job that requires wearing suits every day"? Point taken. Whenever I do go back, trends will have changed and I'm sure I won't be able to resist shopping for that perfect interview suit. I am giving my suits a new home. My younger sis Nou is getting a good portion (she's always wanted to raid my closet!) and the rest is charity.

Here's a thought. I don't know about all the other moms out there but after having kids, I feel as though all my pre-maternity tops are too short. I'm always pulling and tugging at them to stretch them a bit longer. And my youngest is 2 now. Will that feeling ever go away or will I be forever shopping for long shirts?

Interestingly, cleaning out my closet has brought me a huge sigh of relief. I just had waaaay too many clothes and just couldn't or wouldn't let go. Did I mention handbags, belts and accessories? Yes, all out the door too!

Whenever I start adding to my wardrobe again, I'm looking forward to shopping my age! I'm not in my 20s anymore and I don't want to look like it. Baby tees are comfortable to wear but this mom doesn't need to be showing her stretch-marked belly to every one.
